Do Buddhists Believe in God?
B
But when I started reading A Course in Miracles, I realized that God and the Universe are the same thing. Different word, different language but it pointing to the same thing. People are shocked when use the word God, because they believe that Buddhists don’t believe in God. All Buddhists believe in God, except we refer to it as the Universe. Others call it the Divine, Source, Mother Nature, Gaia, Heaven etc. There are many sects within Buddhism, the reason being that when the Buddha became enlightened, he wanted to share his message with people but it was too hard for people to understand. Teaching his undiluted truth about enlightenment was like trying to teach trigonometry to a six-year old. So he dumbed the truth down, making it more and more complex as time went on. This is why there are so many different sects and sutras within Buddhism (Zen, Tibetan, Ananda). Many people still follow the older, “simpler” sects. My family follows SGI (Soka Gakkai International) Buddhism, which is based on the Lotus Sutra(supposedly the last and most complex sutra taught by the Buddha). They try to attain happiness by getting in touch with their “Buddha-nature” and realizing the full potential of themselves.SGI is currently led by a man named Daisaku Ikeda. Sounds good in theory right? I’ll write another blog post on my opinion of SGI Buddhism later. But going back to the original topic: Do Buddhists Believe in God? Yes, Buddhists believe in God. Buddhists don’t like talking about God, because people associate it with Christianity. I believe in God, I’ve felt his Presence before. I don’t consider myself a Buddhist anymore, I just don’t believe happiness can be achieved by chanting prayers. I believe EFT is 10X more powerful. Have any more questions? Buddhists use meditation and chanting to get in touch with the God within themselves, often referring to it as the “Buddha-nature”. The part of themselves that is in touch with the Divine, an endless well of wisdom, courage and love.
